Unfortunately the particular stretch of highway I needed was undergoing a 4 year reconstruction with 2 years yet remaining. It also needed to be done when it was dark enough for the car lights and the city lights to be on and there needed to be just the right amount of traffic so there were lots of vehicles and they kept moving. I also wanted a blue sky so I had to shoot during the “blue hour”, the approximate period of one hour before sunrise or one hour after sunrise. I was patient, waiting till construction was finished and then finding the right evening rush hour in November. As my attention was on setting up my tripod, I was startled by footsteps. It was just a pedestrian walking home from the bus stop. Every time the traffic light changed a block away I could hear the rush of cars behind me as they reached the bridge. I struggled at first to find the right composition. When I was finally ready traffic was too heavy and coming to repeated stops. All too quickly it got to be too dark. I had run out of blue sky. I rushed home to take a closer look at all my shots, hoping that a detailed examination would show something that was good. There wasn't. Just for a moment I felt a bit defeated. But then I realized our relatively mild November weather would continue through the next morning. If I could just figure out what adjustments I needed to make, I could wake up before the sunrise and give it another try. I studied my images and planned some adjustments. The next morning I was up early and back on the bridge before first light so that I could take my shot when there was just the right amount of traffic. Whenever traffic flow was still a bit inconsistent I started to time my shots with the traffic coming from under the bridge below me.
