Bologna Rooftops Print: Italy Wall Art (Canvas/Paper/Acrylic/Metal)

From $33.75 · fulfilled through Etsy

I first visited Europe as a young architecture student. Like most architects and architecture students my focus was on individual buildings. Architects that are really fun of themselves are trying to design monuments to themself and their buildings scream “Look at me!!! On that first visit to Europe I discovered the how lovely a town can be when the individual buildings are there to contribute to the whole. When they aren’t screaming for attention but play their part to create something even larger. On a subsequent visit to Europe I found a great example of this in Bologna. When I arrived I quickly set out to find a tower and climb to the top as I usually do when I arrive in a new Italian city. In Bologna, the best place to survey one’s surroundings is the Torre degli Asinelli. It’s the taller of two towers in the center of historic Bologna. Rising 319’ above the city, it’s been severely damaged by lightning which caused small fires and collapses. There were also large fires in 1185 and 1398 and World War II bombing, but the tower remains. From the top I got a new perspective on the City. The individual buildings, uniform in height and color, recede into the harmonious background so that what is mostly perceived is a texture created by the rooftops. When occasionally a building does manage to stand out from this background, you know that it is a very special government or religious building.
