Gooseberry Falls Print: Lake Superior, Minnesota Wall Art

From $33.75 · fulfilled through Etsy

Somehow, I never even considered that the drought that was affecting Minneapolis was also having an effect on the North Shore. I was completely oblivious until I saw a photo a couple weeks after booking my cabin of a completely dry Gooseberry Falls. Not on trickle of water could be seen. This is a falls that normally has water cascading down with a tremendous force. I felt a bit sick. If Gooseberry was dry would any water be flowing? Should I just cancel the reservation or take a chance? As I counted down the weeks and then days I truly didn’t know what I would encounter, I scanned the news and social media for updates from anyone who had recently visited. To make matters worse, a forest fire was raging a bit farther north and the smoke in the are was resulting in very poor air quality. I was disappointed to realize that I may need to put off photographing the falls, and possibly even my entire trip till later. Conditions did get a bit better. The fire was contained and then extinguished. The area got a bit of rain and some water started flowing over Gooseberry Falls again. And I not only made my trip as planned but photographed Gooseberry Falls again later that fall. This is a photo from early November. Water is still very diminished from typical levels but I really like the effect better than torrents of water. I like the effect so much that I’m not hoping to photograph more of the many North Shore waterfalls while flow remains diminished.
