I think most waterfalls are best photographed from below, or at least , eye level, instead of from above. The problem is that this usually requires a lot more work and can also be outright dangerous or impossible. Photographing Swinging Bridge Falls was one of those times where I knew I needed to get lower to get an angle I would be happy with. I searched for places in the rock wall where I could climb down the rock to a ledge below. Also, more importantly, I took into account if I thought I could climb back up when I was finished. As I scanned the rocks below for possibilities I considered what I was seeing. Was there too large of a distance between possible footholds for the return climb? Were there branches I could grasp to help me pull myself back up? Was there room for error if I lost my balance either on the way down or the way up because I was wearing a backpack with my photo gear? With every more I reminded myself to remain slow and deliberate to keep from making a move that would land me in the river. More than once I questioned if I was doing something I would regret later.
