Every decade or so the Army Corps of Engineers lowers the water level of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis by about 12 feet for an infrastructure inspection. The last time it happened I decided to visit the riverfront since it might provide some unique vantage points for photos that are typical under water. As I was making my way down the stairs to the riverbed from the east bank, I got my first glimpse of the hordes of people already there. I knew instantly that my biggest problem would be dealing with all the people. They were everywhere, some just standing around and some scavenging in the mud for assorted items that had been thrown in the river. I didn't know how I was going to exclude them from my photos. In spite of this I was determined to give it a try. I hoped that as the sun went down many people would start to head home. Eventually the lights of the city started to twinkle. I felt only a slight breeze on my skin as this was an unusually warm and pleasant early October evening. I could make out just the slightest odor, probably from something tossed into the river years ago that was now exposed to the air once again. I tried shots of the skyline but it was impossible to eliminate the people in the foreground. I used an arch of the historic stone arch bridge to frame the iconic A Mill. I roamed around looking for different shots but eventually decided to call it a night and head for home. Then as I was walking back to my car, I passed by the water power plant and noticed the gate was open, something I had never been aware of before. I walked in and only had to take a few steps to see the Minneapolis skyline almost perfectly reflected in the river, a rarity in what is usually a fast moving river. Probably because of the drawdown of the river and the barrier island that usually funnels river water into the plant, the river immediately in front of me was very still. This was my favorite shot from that location. Production and Shipping Time: 5 days for printing, 5 days for shipping. There are 4 ways to print these images. 1).
