When I started researching places I might want to photograph on an upcoming trip to Minnesota's North Shore, I came across some photos of hollow rock. Even though I had lived in Minnesota for over 35 years and had been to the North Shore numerous times, I had no idea Hollow Rock even existed. The North Shore is primarily known for Lake Superior and its many waterfalls so Hollow Rock struck me as a bit unexpected. It's not the sort of thing I was used to seeing in Minnesota so I decided almost immediately that I wanted to photograph it. But when I started researching the location I wasn't at all sure that it was accessible to the general public. When searching I could not find information about the best way to access the rock formation and where to park. In looking at maps it appeared to be located off the shores of a private resort and I wasn't sure if they would allow access or if I needed to access it from someplace farther away and walk a long distance along the beach. However, I had confidence that I would find a way. When I finally made it to the North Shore I was staying in a cabin about 30 minutes away. So on my first evening I decided to check it out in person to be verify how I could access the beach. I knew from my research that the sun would be rising from the general area behind hollow rock and that conditions were right for a nice sunrise the next morning so I hoped to be back to photograph it then. I arrived at the resort and saw only a few cars and no people. I parked on the side of the road and walked over a rise and then suddenly there was the beach and Hollow Rock! It looked like access wasn't going to be the problem I feared it would be. I walked along the beach a bit looking at different angles but decided I would have plenty of time in the morning to pick my best shooting location after I saw exactly where the sun was rising. The next morning I set out about an hour before sunrise so that I would have 30 minutes to pick my spot and set up. However somehow I missed my turn off the highway and didn't realize it till I was almost to the Canadian border! I doubled back and couldn't believe how far I had gone out of my way! Somehow I still managed to arrive 15 min before sunrise. I noticed a few more parked cars but didn't think anything of it until I approached the beach and heard voices. When I walked over the rise and saw the beach I was shocked to see 6 other photographers already set up in a group for a sunrise shot. As I got close I could smell someone's coffee and heard the lapping of the lake on the beach. As I walked around behind them to find what I thought was a good vantage point I realized that the other photographers were already occupying the spot that I thought would work best. For a moment I wasn't sure what to do. Would I need to take my photos from a spot I thought wouldn't provide me what I thought was the best composition? Would I need to try and return the next morning even though it appeared the sunrise would not be as colorful? Suddenly I realized what I needed to do. Since I still had a couple of minutes before the other photographers started shooting, I politely maneuvered to the front and then set up low so I wouldn't be blocking their view. As the sun started rising the sky got more dramatic and the reflection on the water increased. I shot continuously for about 30 minutes and this shot was taken about 1/2 hour after sunrise. It is a composite of three separate photos taken at different exposures but just a split second apart. combining these photos increases the dynamic range of the final photo and allows the shadows to be lightened and the highlights to be darkened, making more detail visible. It feels great to have gotten this photo! I'm so grateful to have discovered this place and be able to position myself to get this shot.
