Scroll down for more information on these options. When I noticed an interesting sky one evening I grabbed my camera gear and headed to the the Downtown East area of Minneapolis. I thought it might be interesting to shoot around the U.S. Bank Stadium so I first walked there but nothing caught my eye. I moved into the street so the bike lane was in the foreground but the large expanse of street was really uninteresting. When the traffic light changed I crossed the street to the lightrail station. I heard a train pulling in behind me and smelled the unmistakable odor of a joint. At Commons Park there were trees blocking the view. I spotted a stairway over tracks but noticed that it was closed off higher up with a gate. I returned to 4th street near where I started and walked back toward downtown. By this the time the sky was getting more dramatic but I couldn’t find an interesting shot. For a moment I didn't know quite what to do. Then I stoped focusing on the skyline and started looking at the individual buildings. My gaze rested on Minneapolis City Hall and it's fabulous clock tower. The clock tower stands 345 feet tall and features clock faces that are 23 feet, 6 inches wide with a minute hand that is 14 feet long. When built, it was the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world with faces slightly larger than Big Ben in London. But just a few years ago the clock faces looked very different. The original glass backlit clock faces were replaced in 1949 with white ceramic and red neon was added to the hands to make them visible at night. Not exactly historically sympathetic to the original. This lasted more than 60 years. But finally, a mechanical refurbishing of the clock took place and as part of that, the backlit transparent face was recreated resulting in a clock that again appears as originally intended since it was finished in 2017.
