I had been taking photos for many years before the advent of good cell phone cameras and I had almost never been in the right place at the right time. I used to think I was unlucky. Even when I did happen to catch a dramatic sky, it was just a sky, nice, but without the added interest of a skyline or interesting foreground. After I started to devote more time to photography, I spent more time examining the photos of others that I thought were amazing and at least half of them had dramatic skies. These photos inspired such awe in me and I longed to be able to create such photos for myself. But how could I be sure to be in the right place at the right time? Did I just need to be luckier? Did I need to be outside somewhere for every sunset and sunrise and storm? Did I need to carry my camera and gear with me literally everyplace I went? I didn't have a clue what I needed to do but I resolved to find out! I'm a pretty good problem solver and I approached this as a problem to be solved. I tried to lean what I could about the stories associated with the photos that had inspired me when I could find more information. Whenever I saw a photo with an amazing sky I was sure to track down the photographer and read whatever I could find related to the photo. After some trial and error I had a breakthrough when I learned about the preparation of most seasoned photographers before a photoshoot. They tracked the weather and knew when the conditions were right for amazing skies. For sunsets, it wasn't just clouds they wanted. It was knowing the type of clouds and their height in the sky. I started to learn what I could, including what apps were available to help me better predict conditions at a specific time. I eventually decided to try to plan a sunset behind downtown St. Paul. I had already found a great vantage point so I started researching when the sun would be setting behind downtown St. Paul from this spot. I identified an approximately two week window of time when the sun would be setting in the area I wanted, but I still needed to wait for the right atmospheric conditions to get a great sunset. I started paying much closer attention to the weather and forecasts in order to find the perfect time to take my shot. I was about a week into my window without the atmospheric conditions for a good sunset. When I awoke on March 24, the conditions again didn’t seem promising. It was raining with a forecast for continued rain throughout the day. All morning and into the afternoon I heard the raindrops on my roof and when I looked out the window I saw the pools of water in the street. I was pretty disappointed but I just continued to wait. Finally about 3pm it started to clear up. I checked the revised forecast and the rain had moved out. The question now was how soon the clouds would start clear out. Would there be just the right amount of clouds and at the right height to get a good sunset? I continued to monitor the sky the rest of the afternoon. Even though the sky continued to be overcast with no trace of the sun I decided to take a chance and set out about an hour before sunset. I arrived at my spot about 30 minutes before the actual sunset. I wasn’t feeling very hopeful. The sky was still completely overcast with no sign of the sun. I didn't see how it was possible for the clouds to clear enough to even get a glimpse of the sun. It seemed clear that I would need to try my shot another day and hope for the right conditions in the new week. I started my car and put it into drive. But one thought wouldn't leave me. What if it did clear up? What if after all my planning and the time to drive there I missed what happened to be a great sunset? It was silly to even think about leaving now with only about 20 minutes till the sunset. I promised myself that I could head home the minute the sun set if there was nothing to see. I put my car back in park and removed my key from the ignition. And waited. I didn't need to wait long. about 5 minutes later the clouds started to part and I began to see glimpses of magenta in the sky! I grabbed my gear and ran to my chosen spot. As I was running the sky just got more and more amazing. I set up in record time and started to take a series of shots. The sky just got better and better and I was in awe of what I was seeing! Then, as the sun passed behind the skyscrapers, the color almost completely disappeared. But I had gotten the shot I dreamed of! I think this photo will always be one of my favorites. Not only do I love it for what it is, but it will remind me of the first time all my planning paid off in a spectacular shot. It will also remind me of the lesson I learned about how quickly conditions can change and the need for patience. Production and Shipping Time: 5 days for printing, 5 days for shipping.
