Choose size & finishThrough the years I’ve taken notice of the Minneapolis skyline heading into town from the NE on interstate 35W. I always think to myself how beautiful it is. So I naturally started thinking about photographing it but realized the view from the vantage point of the elevated freeway is unique and doesn’t exist immediately adjacent to the freeway. I did consider for a moment how I might be able to photograph if from the freeway. Is there someone way I could take a photo while driving at 55 mph or riding with someone? Do I dare pull over to the shoulder, maybe fake car trouble? Do I stop at 3 am to take a photo when there is almost no traffic? Of maybe someday road crews will be doing repairs and have some of the lanes closed and I can sneak onto the freeway. None of these seemed like workable solutions. But I was determined to somehow get a shot with the view I loved. or close to it. I started exploring the adjacent neighborhoods to see if there were other good vantage points. I had high hopes for the parking lot of a nearby office building but I wasn’t high enough. Another night I got the idea to park in a nearby shopping center and walk through a sliver of wooded land to be next to the freeway. I parked my car at the far edge of the parking lot, far away from the store. I could hear the traffic of the interstate and knew I was probably less that 100 feet away, but couldn’t see the freeway because of the dense wooded area. I started off into the woods and almost immediately smelled smoke and saw the flickering flames of a fire. Memories came flooding back to me and once again I could taste grilled hot dogs from camp fires. As I got a bit closer I realized I had come across a homeless camp that I never knew existed. When I tried to skirt around the area I encountered thick underbrush. I eventually made it to the edge of the freeway but realized the view wasn’t what I hoped it would be. And when I got home I spend at least an hour picking burrs off my socks and jeans. I was really discouraged. I finally decided to check out a cemetery on the north side of the freeway with a higher vantage point. Upon arriving however, I discovered a road between the cemetery and the freeway that paralleled the freeway. And following the road I discovered a place called Ridgway Parkway Park with a great view of downtown Minneapolis. I never knew this park existed and it doesn’t appear on the Minneapolis Parks website with all the other Minneapolis parks. Later I asked around and none of my friends had heard of it either. It seems to mostly be used as a make-out location for high school students so maybe if I had grown up in Minneapolis I would have known about it. While I loved the view, the first time I photographed it I was disappointed with my photos because I didn't yet have a high quality telephoto lens that I could use to enlarge the skyline. When I returned with the right equipment, I decided to zoom in and shoot it in sections, a type of photo called a HDR panorama. The final photo actually merged 22 different photos, which also increases the dynamic range and allowed me to lighten the shadows and darken the highlights to expose more detail than what otherwise would have been possible. I was so happy to finally get this shot after all my efforts! Production and Shipping Time: 5 days for printing, 5 days for shipping. There are 4 ways to print these images. 1).
