On my last visit to Chicago I only had 3 nights, not nearly enough for all I wanted to do and photograph. One photograph I especially wanted was the nighttime skyline from North Avenue Beach. I had planned for my visit as best I could using google maps and street view but I knew it would be best to arrive at least an hour before sunset so that I could scout the area in person. I had left this photo for my last evening in town so there was no screwing up. I spent most of the day at the Museum Campus, visiting the Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, and just hanging out. When the time came to leave, I jumped in my car and headed north on S Lake Shore Drive. I thought I was prepared because I had looked into the specifics of parking in the closest lot and I had already entered the lot address into my navigation system. But when I arrived at the lot entrance I couldn’t believe my eyes. The lot was closed! Not knowing what to do I got back on Lakeshore Drive and continued north I hadn’t focused on a backup parking location and I wasn’t sure what I would find to the west. However I seemed to remember noticing that farther north there was another parking lot. But when I arrived there it was restricted to restaurant parking. My heart sank. Not knowing what to do or where to go I again headed north because it seemed to be the easiest thing to do. When I got off at the next exit I guessed that I might be too far north to walk back to the beach in the time I had left so I decided to go back to the Museum Campus to photograph the skyline from there and try to salvage something from the evening. When I arrived back at the Museum Campus the first thing I noticed was that there were a lot more cars than there were when I left just a short time before. I ended up parking in a restricted area and had to move my car in order to avoid getting ticketed just as I was setting up my shot. But eventually I got a shot. And then I realized there was still a bit of light in the sky and I got a crazy idea. Did I dare try to drive back to North Avenue Beach to get the shot I had wanted in the first place? Would it be possible? What did I have to loose? I jumped back in my car and headed north again along the lakeshore. This trip I made much better time as the rush hour was winding down. I got back to North Avenue Beach and the parking lot was now open with many spots available! And the sky was still more blue than black! I grabbed my gear and raced south to the lakeshore. There was no time to explore the subtleties of different locations. I had time for one shot and it would need to do. I set up, and took a series of photos at different exposures so I was sure to get the one that would look best. I wasn’t completely confident about what I had gotten until I could look at the images on my computer. In my haste the buildings were crooked and I had cut off the beacon at the very top of the John Hancock Center. But through the wonder of Photoshop I was able to restore the beacon and the sky above. I’m really grateful to have gotten this shot after all I went through! Production and Shipping Time: 5 days for printing, 5 days for shipping. There are 4 ways to print these images. 1).
