Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Lighthouse, Door County Wisconsin - Canvas/Paper/Acrylic/Metal

From $33.75 · fulfilled through Etsy

What if I told you that sometimes the best shots are the ones you almost miss? That’s what I discovered on my way to catch the fall colors at Jens Jensen Road before the rain and swarm of fellow photographers. Just the day before, I had visited the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Lighthouse, only to leave disappointed. The sky had been a dull blanket of grey, lending no drama to the lighthouse's striking figure. I had left a bit dejected, my camera full of uninspired shots. But as dawn broke on this particular morning, the sky transformed, urging me to give the lighthouse another try. As I made my way from the parking lot, the crisp air tingled against my skin, and the rhythmic lull of water crashing against the breakwater filled my ears. Seeking a new perspective than the day before, I ventured almost to the end of breakwater, capturing a few shots along the way. My initial shots seemed promising, but lacking. My inclination was to abandon this endeavor and pursue my original plan elsewhere. But a nagging feeling kept me rooted. With a little more patience, I backtracked a bit on the breakwater. The change in perspective was subtle, yet profound. The composition fell into place, though I found myself too close to encapsulate the scene in its entirety. A hasty lens swap to accommodate the wider scene was accompanied by a dramatic sky unveiled just as I finished. In that serendipitous moment, I tripped the shutter and captured an image that reminds me of the crisp air, the melodic waves, and the shot I almost missed.
