Have you ever watched the sky awaken over Lake Superior, when the world is still hushed and waiting? That's what brought me to a tombolo on the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior. Although there are others, when locals and visitors alike refer to “the tombolo” they all seem to be referring to this particular location. What is a tombolo? I confess I had to look it up after hearing the references to this location. It’s a narrow strip of sand and rock connecting the mainland to a small island, shaped by the meeting of waves from opposite directions. On this morning my interest was in finding an interesting foreground element for a photo of the first light of day and I thought this particular island, and the adjacent rocks, might provide an interesting composition. So I rose before dawn and was now walking along the shore of Lake Superior. Each step crunched on the pebbles underfoot, and the cool, earthy smell of damp rock filled my lungs. I could hear the rhythmic lapping of the lake against the shore, a soft, soothing cadence. I passed the tombolo and suddenly the shoreline was littered with large boulders, requiring me to concentrate on my steps in the dim light so as not to trip up. I scouted for spots and appealing compositions and then I set up my camera and waited, hoping for some color to paint the sky. From previous sunrise shoots, I was fully aware that often the magic happens before dawn, so I knew I needed to be ready early. This morning was no different. Strands of pink and orange soon appeared in the sky. The colors were vivid but fleeting so I quickly took advantage of the predawn sky, experimenting with various exposures and occasionally altering my location slightly. In no time the colors faded as the sun peaked above the horizon and just like that the magic was over. I was grateful to have witnessed, and captured, the light of another new day.
